That is because the HD floppy has an extra hole to tell the FDHD drive that
it is a high density disk.  The 800k drive doesn't look for the hole, and
therefore
will format the disk as 400 or 800k.  The FDHD drive sees the hole and looks
at the format of the disk.  If they (the media and the format) don't match,
the System tells you that the disk is formatted improperly and rejects it.

it?

Here's a bug only if you use version 3.0 of SuperBoomerang AND StartupManager:
 If you rename CEToolbox to anything other than "CEToolbox" such as "CEToolbox
1.6.2" then whenever you try to select SuperBoomerang in the StartupManager,
you will bomb!!! It's a strange combination of factors. Also, if these
conditions
are present, StartupManager will prevent SuperBoomerang from loading. Strange,
since v2.03 of StartupManager does not present these problems.

Subject: SMART ALARMS BUG

Smart Alarms v3.07 has a bug when interacting with at least one screen saver
(After Dark 2.0v), although I haven't tested it on others. Also, this bug is
reproducible under System 6.05 (the OLD Sound Manager), but is not tested on
other Systems.

The bug is:  if After Dark is active, and if the module running at the time
has a sound, then if Smart Alarms sends up a reminder with a sound, you will
bomb. This bug has been reported to Berkeley Systems (After Dark), but hasn't
yet been conveyed to JAM Software.

HELP!  Is there any way to get more memory avail for programs using a 2 meg
classic and system 7?  I only get 777 k free!  I am using 3 classics on a
network,
using one of them with system 7 to get file sharing
abilities w/o having to DEDICATE one of the macs to a fileserver.  The whole
point is to be able to use the Mac with system 7 on it, but I
can't even open up Filemaker Pro with 1024 k!  Using 777k is REALLY
SLOW!  Is there anything I can do??  Thanks in Advance.

Hi,
 I am having a problem with a Classic running 6.07 system... It decides
 it wants to restart... in the middle of a finder operation... Usually
 it happens right after quitting out of Excel.  Doesn't happen on the
 other two Classics in the same room... Is it an init I need to get rid
 of?  I have taken most of the inits out of the system folder, still
 does it.  Is there something wierd about Excel 2.2a and 6.07 on a
 classic??? Thanks in advance.

The install procedure in America Online is 25% retarded--my local Tymnet 2400
access node  (Lowell, MA) did not appear until I had selected what would be
my
second choice, the Lawrence 1200 baud Telenet line.  Other than that,
everything worked fine.  The install gets a 6 out of 10, but the service
itself gets a perfect score.

If your drive is one made for the Mac, then it may be proprietary.  I
installed a Toshiba 100meg HD in both my IIsi and my SE/30 and the apple
HD software was not compatible.  It seems logical that if apples HD
software is not compatible with other hard drives, then other HD software
will not be compatible with apple HD.

Sorry, to late.  I already sent it back.  Never could get the darn thing
working.
I think it has to do with my phone lines being too noisy.  At one friends house
about 4 miles away it worked fine.  At another friends house who lives next
door, it didn't work either (same problem as at my house).

Very strange...

BTW, I called the phone company and had them check my lines. They said they
were "A-OK".  Yeah right.  They also said that they would only guarantee voice
quality and not data transfer quality.  What age are they living in anyway?!?!?

Dennis, I think that the SIMM that you saw is the video RAM SIMM.  I know that
they are marked like that.  The 2-megs of RAM in the LC is a group of chips
that are soldered onto the logic board; they are not SIMMs.

Mike, you do not install fonts in the system folder with System 7; you install
them in the system itself.  In system 7, the system file is a suitcase that
can be opened by double-clicking on it.  For that matter, font suitcases can
also be opened by double-clicking on them.  The only "problem" that there is,
is that you have no way of creating a font suitcase under system 7, so you have
to keep an empty one around somewhere to duplicate whenever you need one.  BTW,
the system folder is not clutter with INITs or CDEVs in system 7--they go in
their own folders that are in the system folder.

Uh huh.  No such thing as screen fonts in the system folder--unless you want

I use Extensions Manager 1.1 by Richardo Batista of Apple Computer. It's free
and was the only way to go with System 7.0 when it was released. Only thing
I can't do with is is reorder the extension/cdev loading order with it. There
is supposed to be an new System 7 Init Picker. The old one didn't work. Haven't
tried it yet.

3) Which do people like better internal or external hard drives. Why?

One good reason to go external is that if it ever gets sick, only the drive
goes to the hospital and you still have your Mac to use.

tip that I've found that the Ram Cache does'nt necessarily need to be set as
high as 512k.

On 3 different IIsi's (all 5meg units w/sys 6.0.7) I've found that the speed
increase
starts at 92k, 192k and 384k -- apparently the 512k is high enough to cover
all situations.

to install the ROMs yourself from a SE or a Plus. Apple threatened to sue,

Outbound. They can include the Mac ROMs because Apple says so.

I just added memory to my LC bringing it to a total of 10mb RAM.  (Previously
had a tal of 4mb)  Now when I check memory usage under "About this Macintosh",

the system is using 3500k.  Before the change, that number was around 2100k.

The RAM cache is set at 256k, the same setting I had before the change was
made.  Nothing else about the computer was changed.

I am using system 7, wi SAM 3.0.2, After Dark, & Superclock 3.9 as my only
extensions.  I tried booting with extensions off, and the total is still
around 3000k.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or explanations !!

I have run out of space on a floppy disk used to start up a Mac SE which is
connected to a Novell Network.  I would like to add the fonts required by
Hypercard
2.0 - but no more room on the boot floppy.

Before I go and do something stupid, does anyone know if I could switch-launch
to a Finder file and a larger System file with the extra fonts installed on
the File server? - The file server is a 386 PC running Novell Netware 2.15,
with an appletalk card,
 the network is Arcnet and we are using Farallon PhoneNet connectors to get
to the Macs.

One more question - what is it about the printer port circuitry that makes it
connectible to appletalk and not the modem port?  Is it that the appletalk
connections
run only to the printer and not to the modem port?

And still: My DOS machine crashes almost NEVER. My Mac tends to crash a lot.

I have recently seen QuicKeys 2.1 failing repeatedly to work properly with Word
4. But more and more this appears to be a problem with Word itself. For
instance,
I have been working in the offices of some people who have QK 2.1 on their DTP
production machine. I noticed that, like me, they have certain dialogue-box
buttons or check-boxes dealt with via macros. But when you run the macro to
push the button or click in the check-box, about half the time it doesn't
"take".
You have to issue the macro three or four times before the selection is made.
You see the mouse pointer jump to the right location, but the desired result
doesn't occur.

The people in that office have been grumbling about it for some time. But more
and more they think it is Word's infamous non-standard-ness that is causing
the problem. I hear there is something given to Mac developers called the
dialogue
manager, or some such thing - so that you can write dialogue box routines using
standard programming guidelines. I hear that Microsoft wrote its *own* dialogue
manager, and that is perhaps part of the cause, maybe all of the cause, of these
particular QK problems. Dunno about other sorts of QK problems; haven't worked
with it enough yet.

I did notice that in some situations, the main QK control window does not
disappear;
in trying to devise certain macros intended to work within modal dialogues,
I find that QK's own main dialogue, which cannot be moved, parks itself right
on top of the dialogues I want to deal with - making it impossible to define
accurately the location of a 'click' macro! Wow! Now, it's possible I just
haven't
worked with the program long enough; this might be a function of still being
in QuicKeys-1.x-think mode.

BUT, the PaintWriter lists for $500 more than the DeskWriter C.  The only thing

You don't say whether you're willing to pay Adobe-type prices or are looking
for a cheaper shareware font. But here's a couple of suggestions:

Adobe's font package # 110 contains "Nuptial Script" (can't get more
marriage-like
than that), "Cascade Script" and "Medici Script".

At a somewhat lower price, Casady & Greene has "Calligraphy", which is a very
nice font suitable for your purpose.

There are many public domain and shareware fonts that are calligraphic or
script-like.
I've looked at them from time to time as they came across my machine. But,
unfortunately,
I don't remember any names at the moment. Maybe someone else can help with this.

However, if you have a LaserWriter Plus, you have "Zapf Chancery". That's
calligraphic
and suitable for wedding envelopes. And the price certainly is right - FREE
WITH YOUR PRINTER!

A real popular one (you see it all the time on the thermograph ones) is Park
Avenue (I used it for my wedding invites the first time around, as a matter
of fact).  Looks nice in small point sizes as well as large.

Some others you might consider are:
Zapf Chancery and Boecklin from Adobe, Dorovar and Gazelle from Casady & Greene
(aka Fluent Laser Fonts), Vivaldi from The Font Company, Florens from
LetterPerfect,
Metropolitan from Dubl-Click.

Hope these suggestions help.

For the PC, I agree!  OTOH, we received our copies of 2.0.3 at the office today,
where I spent part of my morning upgrading all the machines in the department.
 The users seemed quite pleased (I didn't get a chance to play around with it,
but will come the weekend); the speed has *dramatically* improved (over 20%,
according to the installation notes) and there are a number of bug fixes.  When
you consider the list we sent to WP had over 20 complaints, I figure they've
caught at least 15.  The others are pretty minor, albeit annoying....

Yeah. Where I need preview with zoom is in lineart mode. My Umax software
doesn't
have it, neither does PhotoShop or Enhance! Enhance is an excellent and easy
to use package, I prefer it to PhotoShop for black and white photos. I design
printed pieces and usually use photos in black and white as FPO's (for position
only). Often, I will have transparencies and will have to make a black and white
negative print (Umax has a light box coming out for the UC630 which will
eliminate
the hassles - can't wait - they also have a 1200dpi scanner but who can afford
the file size?) and then scan it in and reverse it.

With PhotoShop I can do a decent job and the client gets the idea. With Enhance
I can do a GREAT job and make the scanned image looked better than if it were
a B&W photo originally. I did a 600dpi scan and had a 1200dpi Compugraphic print
made. Blew the client away!

I can set the resolution from 10-600dpi. For photos I usually use 75dpi if it's
for laser printouts, 150-300 for 1200-2400dpi, and 600 for color photos. I have
gamma corrections and a bunch of other options I have yet to figure out. I only
use the Umax scan software for quick jobs where I won't be editing. I use
Enhance
for black and white and PhotoShop for color. I still miss the AppleScan software
for line art scans - preview zooms and minor editing all in a simple program.


Can you do single color scans - red, blue, green, etc.?

Unfortunately, some responses I'm getting about this from the Usenet dweebs
seem to run along the lines of, "So what?  Hey, my CAD program doesn't run on
my 512K.  Should I bitch?  What do you expect out of a 68000 machine?"

There are huge numbers of owners of higher end machines who don't give a damn
about anything but themselves.  Unfortunately, it seems Apple employees count
for a good number of those people.  <sigh>

Such will _always_ be the case.  But that wasn't my argument.  Apple continues
to sell 8 MHz 68000 machines, and is pushing System 7 as the second coming of
the Lord.  There's a HUGE contradiction there.  Many people are on these
machines,
and don't have anything faster to go to.  My point is, Apple should admit that
System 7 isn't for everyone.  Hell, they admitted that MODE32 was the proper
way to handle the dirty ROM issue.  They've proven they've got guts, now if
they would only admit to the problem.  System 7 is far too slow on any 68000
machine.

The day will come when the latest and greatest won't work on my Plus.  I know
that.  But Apple should admit that that time has come.  Just say that System
7 works, but unacceptably, and is therefore not recommended.  People who want
the System 7 dependent, or even just savvy, programs will have to move on up.
 No big deal.

Absolutely! Install a software router such as farallon's Liason or Apple's
Internet
Router. I find them generally more robust and less expensive than a harware
router - and I prefer Liason by a long shot. For the price of a single package,
you can route EtherTalk to LocalTalk, LocalTalk to LocalTalk and set
up a dial up facility with password protection and dialback options.

Liason operates best as a background task on a powerful server - and SE/30 class
machine at minimum. You will get substantially better performance on a Macintosh
IIci or IIfx. Be sure to install the software patch which is required for IIfx
compatability if you elect to install it on that machine.

This configuration will give you cost effective, relatively trouble free routing
on a moderately sized Ethernet - say a single segment of some 10 to 15 users
with no more than a half dozen or so shared LocalTalk peripherals. More
extensive
user levels require more hardware and extensive routing to avoid traffic
bottlenecks.

   Hmmm, maybe so, but the speed only counts if you have a LaserWriter

   Having a 68030 won't help.  I have a SE/30 and printing on my Immy is
slow as heck as well.  Or it was until I removed all of the TrueType fonts
from my system.  As soon as I did that I noticed about a 33% performance
improvement.  (Printing with the Best mode, both for the Immy and for MS
Word.)

   Part of the problem is in the printer.  ImageWriter's are slow anyway,
and I think the other part is with TrueType.  (Personal opinion).

The upgraded SE will NOT support the FDHD diskette drive unless it was either
one of the models manufactured in the several months before manufacturing halted
(in which case it contains the required SWIM integrated circuit package) or
unless you purchase an FDHD drive upgrade kit which includes the SWIM for IWM
exchange.

FDHD drives are hard to find at reasonable prices. Contact MacFriends in
Portland
OR at [phone] for a quote on a new or refurbished drive with or without
the SWIM. You might also talk to them or a local Apple dealer about an SE/30
upgrade (which does NOT itself include an FDHD drive and SWIM) rather than add
a third party accelerator.

You should be aware that prices for the SE/30 upgrade kit may again fall as
the result of the introduction of the new Macintosh Classic II 68030 logic board
and the Macintosh Classic II logic board upgrade kit. The new CPUs will ship
102191 but upgrade kits have not historically been available for about 90 days
after the new CPUs ship.

I would be happy to send you copies of PostScript programs I have written to
identify printer characteristics and I'll kick out a little program to modify

the default time outs for you.

All I want in return is specific configuration information about your printer
- such as: make / model / memory on board / where you purchased it and (if
you're
willing to disclose it) what you paid for it. If you'ld rather netmail the info
feel free to do so.

The first file I'll send (and I'll do it by sending an actual copy of the very
short ASCII PostScipt code in a message) will let you effectively 'test' the
printer by determining lots of information in addition to the page count. It
will even produce a table from which to determine the speed and stop - start
- parity characteristics of your serial or AppleTalk ports.

I'll send along the default timeout modifier in the same message tomorrow -
just make sure that the credit lines remain if you choose to pass it along to
anyone. And you are free to do that.

If you wish to carry on a discussion about PostScript or specifically about
the errors you are seeing we can certainly do that - most of the information
is of sufficiently general use that we can probably keep the discussion 'public'
rather than resort to netmail. I would suggest that you pick up copies of the
Addison - Wesley PostScript references - the so called red, blue and green
books.
Without them to refer to, you are unlikely to make much sense out of PostScript
or what I have to say about it.

Seems silly to make people download an entire new system version just for the

What????? What you're saying doesn't make sense.

Are you confusing 512K VRAM SIMMs with main memory SIMMs? The first 2 megs of
main memory on the LC are soldered onto the motherboard. 512K SIMM chips can
NOT be used in the two main memory SIMM sockets on the board. Installing 1 meg
SIMMs brings the LC up to 4 megs of main memory, installing 4 meg SIMMs brings
it up to 10 megs (we've got a 10 meg system).

The LC is available with either 256K VRAM or 512K VRAM installed directly from
Apple. I BELIEVE the 512K VRAM version doesn't come with a keyboard, but I may
be all wet about that. That WAS at least true at one time. I don't have the
lastest Developer Price List handy. We ordered to 512K VRAM version without
keyboard from the Apple Developer program.

The unusually long SIMM that has "ONLY FOR USE IN MAC LC" on it is not a main
memory SIMM, but rather is the VRAM chip. There are two other normal SIMM
sockets
right next to it that are for expanding main memory. The best way to find out
how much memory you currently have installed on your system is to do an "About
the Finder..." command.

I'm very happy with our LC. I've been working with a twin to it at my "day job"
for about 6 months now and like the LC very much. Expanded up to 10 megs and
with a 13" RGB monitor it's a wonderful software development platform offering
all the performance I need for the type of work I do.

We use LC's at the consulting firm where I work for a variety of software
development
tasks and multimedia work. Everyone there loves them. They're far preferred
over the si's we have, although that's mainly because the si's have gray-scale
portrait monitors while the LC's all have 13" RGB monitors. The point is that
the LC's offer performance that's perceived by the developers to be virtually
identical to the si's for a WHOLE lot less money. I think the LC is absolutely
the best Mac for the money that Apple produces.

Of course, what's the "best Mac" is somewhat of a religious issue with many
people. Again, if money were no object I'd throw away my LC and buy a Tower
Mac, everytime!

uses Fax Modems are miles better.

There are obvious considerations like:
 (a) Fax modems are about half the price of a decent regular
fax machine (hereafter called a steam fax)
 (b) If you need to fax a lot of non computer-originated
stuff then you had better settle for a steam fax.
 (c) The alternative is to add a scanner to your system in
which case either (a) or (b) above does not apply.

BUT for computer originated documents a fax modem is far
better because:
 (i) The output is much, much cleaner
 (ii) You are much more flexible and have far more power for
things like multiple destinations of one fax.
 (iii) It is far easier to 'turn a fax round' with a fax
modem. [Sending a steam fax of a steam fax is awful]
 (iv) Scheduling of numbers of faxes to take advantage of
cheap phone rates or another person's fax only being on when
you are out etc is <to use an English colloquialism> a piece
of piss.
 (v) Steam faxes (except the very expensive ones) use
horrible curly thermal fax paper which (1) fades quickly and (2) is
expensive (3) always runs out just after all the shops
shut (4) is usually only available in the wrong size for
your steam fax.
 (vi) If you want a hard copy of an incoming fax you print
it on your ordinary computer printer.
 (vii) BEST OF ALL - no paper all over the place. There is
something inherently inefficient about writing
electronically on one box, then having to print out so your
opus can be carried over to another box to be sent out
electronically. Most incoming faxes can just be read on
screen too.

 Major drawbacks are:

 (i)  That incoming fax files are big so you
won't want to leave too many cluttering up your hard disk
<60k for one page is not uncommon>.

 (ii) It's also almost too easy. I find that I send
a lot of short 'memo' faxes rather waste time
trying to locate people by phone when I'm busy.

Of course all this applies to a single user. If you have a
number of people wanting to fax in (say) an office then a
steam fax has its advantages.

 I use a fax modem constantly - sending out about 80 faxes a
week to clients and receiving about 5 a week. When the
fax modem had to go off to be repaired I got very frustrated
having to go back to the limitations and inefficiency of my
back-up steam fax. Fax modems are not only better in theory
- they are better in fact. [At least until the universal
adoption of E.Mail.]

Very true, but how about this idea. The keyboard could be another monitor on
which you type. Then the characters could change based on the font and size
you had selected. This would also mean that if there was a yes/no question the
keyboard could go blank and two big keys could appear. A yes key and a no key.

Apple printers are very expensive compared to 3rd party printers, I've made
more than one stupid mistake with apple printers and scanners. I can recomened
the GCC BLP2S for many reasons.

 It's print quality is equal to Apples if not better.
 They don't force you to get a new Photo-sensitive drum each time you replace
the toner. You only have to do that when the drum wears out. They are seperate
parts.
The price is much more reasonable.
They offer great tech. support and cus. svc. You can get a toner cartrage
overnight!

If you get the BLPS it's also quicker than something like the PLNT by Apple.
8PPM.

It also has real front to back printing for think paper or envelopes. The paper
does not have to curve at all while in the printer.

If you are getting a printer only for DTP in standard fonts you might even want
to concider the PLP2 or PLP2S. They are really cheap and ofer a $1000 dollar
upgrade to BLP level.

I have a feeling that the problem has to do with opening a resource file that's
already open, then closing it.  How about trying to open the file with some
other programs like ResEdit, and SoundEdit?

I'm glad to hear it's in the control panel code.  I'm =much= more worried about
bugs in the INIT code, as that is running all the time.

I don't know about this TurboCache, but I do know about the IIci. It does not
come with a hardware cache, but it does have a dedicated slot next to the
processor.
I installed a 128k static ram cache just recently (for $200) and I can tell
you that the claims for a 30% increase in repetitive code operations are true!

As of a few weeks ago, the IIci comes with a 32K cache card in the slot, at
the same price as previously.

Apple insists that there is virtually no performance improvement over a 32K
cache with a larger cache.  MacUser ran some tests about a year ago that tended
to substantiate Apple.  They said that there was an improvement, but that it
wasn't cost effective.

I tried new System software and still nothing.
I moved all of the Extensions, etc. out and still nothing.

Then a brainstorm.
I am using Fileguard 2.5.2 which is _not_ 7 friendly. I had removed the program
from the drive but had forgotten that volume protection was on my 105. Once
I removed that, smooth (but placid) sailing.
With the addition of MODE32, it's a little bit more palatable but I still don't
have the CPU that 7 should have.

CounterPOINT by itself isn't a point program, it's an editor which is used with
several modules from Copernicus or Tabby.  If you don't have either Cop or
Tabby,
CounterPOINT is useless.  Last I heard, the shareware fee for CP was $40.  When
you add that to about $50 for Copernicus or $80 for Tabby, you end up spending
a lot of money.  That may have made sense when Copernicus was the only game
in town, but now that Copernicus II is about to be released with all of
CounterPOINT's
capabilities (and more), and now that the much cheaper shareware MacWoof is
available, CopunterPOINT just doesn't make economic sense.  This may change
if and when CounterPOINT develops to the point where it no longer needs
Cop/Tabby
modules, but it isn't there yet.

Please get your facts straight before you mouth off.  None of the owner's
manuals
for any of the models for which Mode32 is intended (II, IIx, IIcx, SE/30) make
any claim that the ROMs are 32 bit clean.  What they DO say is that the machines
can use higher capacity SIMMs (4MB and up), and that is true.  They say nothing
about whether the Mac operating system (6.0.X at that time) would be able to
address that much memory, which it couldn't even on Macs with 32 bit clean ROMs.

As for a class action suit, dream on.  There was no such suit filed, and in
the opinions of people who know the law a lot better than you or I, such a suit
wouldn't have stood a chance of succeeding.

Welp, I sent the author a letter asking if he/she is still in business...  I

I can use.  I was interested in an update perhaps, one that would support

and multi-dimentional arrays as well as a full preprocessor.
Oh well... do you know of any other pd or shareware C compilers out there?

One person who used it said that it compiled and ran just fine, but the program
that it compiled bombed out when it quit.  I'd assume they're using a 030 or
something, but I don't know...  Since I've got a Lisa and it runs just fine
on here, I can't say...

It would be nice if I had a full library of the toolbox and system calls for
it as functions rather than traps definitions.

My version of it says "3a  6/15/86" as well in the info box, so we have the
same one.

I contacted Apple on this very question early this summer. They told me
Apple-Europe was in charge of the project and gave me a number. I called

Casady & Greene (who sell the Cyrillic set we use0 suggested a program called
MacKeymeleon II from Avenue Software in Quebec @ 418+682-6968, to change
keyboard mappings. It works very well. It did not include a Russian mapping,
but we made on up for the ATASTEEL layout which our American Russian
Translators use. Our Russian translators hadn't used keyboards at home so the
layout made little difference to them.

If you stick with one set of fonts or sets from one publisher, they'll
probably have the same keyboard mappings. Then you can print out key caps to
put directly on the keyboard or better to put inside a keyskin.

Well, you could do what I did: get a personal loan from your bank and then buy
the machine wherever you want.  The bank I went to had better rates than any
of the dealers, anyway.  This way, I could shop for the best price whether the
dealer had financing or not.

a util like QuicKeys. I have not seen any free- or shareware that would swap
these *particular* ones, though there are utils to swap certain others.

The guy is too busy. I would sure love to have the util for myself. Perhaps
there are a few other folks in the Mac world who would also like such a thing.

So now I am casting about for someone who could write it. From what the local
programmer said, it would not be insanely difficult to do. He just doesn't have
the time. I would be glad to help defray some of the programming costs, though
I haven't got the foggiest idea what they mmight be. I have no interest in
making
any money from the utility; I would just really love to have it for myself and
then to send it out 'round the boards for whoever else could make use of it.

If there's any programmer here with a little free time, please let me know or
respond via netmail to me c/o 343/8 (Seattle Software Exchange - see origin
line). Make sure to include your BBS phone number in the mail, please. I have
an old nodelist and until it's updated I sometimes have to play tricks with
my mail config files to dial a correct number. If you're sending netmail please
also post a mailing address in the event I can't send crashmail to you at all
for some reason.

(I will be glad to provide as complete as possible a description of features
- there wouldn't be many) and even make some imitations screen dumps suggesting
the look of the thing.) To whoever replies: Thanks in advance.

Consultants don't always know what they are talking about, and I suspect this
may be one such case.  Get them to tell you exactly what the "bugs" are, then
let us know, will you?  It's pretty hard to respond otherwise.

System 7's File Sharing is ideal for the small network you want to set up.
I use it to network 3 - 6 Macs at work (3 normally, but I and other staff often
bring in our own) and 3 AppleTalk Imagewriters.  It has been almost completely
free of problems.

like that. And despite system bombs, SCSI chain problems, and some other very

I am planning to buy Frontier the moment it is available, and use it to the
fullest. Now, I could have a Frontier 'agent' in the background managing the
events - instead of applications launching each other, I have an agent that
looks at the running applications, the time, and decides what to do at any given
moment. This way, I could devote certain times to certain tasks, and I could
make sure that the application always has enough memory available to run, by
quitting others first. Quitting and launching is in the 'required' set of
events,
but I would like to be able to know in my scripts whether an application is
doing anything. For example, I would hate to quit Mansion when a user is logged
on. A 'status request' event would be perfect.

I would like to see some discussion on this - I am crossposting this to MacSysop
and Tabby. It would, after all, be best if all BBS programs agreed on what a
status request looks like...
